The mission of 12 Blocks West is to collaborate with community partners and residents in western Independence, Sugar Creek, and Blue Summit, building upon existing strengths, to promote safe, stable, multi-income neighborhoods where families, schools and businesses thrive.

We value stable neighborhoods

We value economic opportunity and vitality for all

We value a well-educated community

We value a community of health and well being.

Social Networks

Homebuyer Education

One of the most significant financial decisions in anyone’s life is buying a home.  Our Homebuyer Education class will teach individuals how to navigate through the often difficult process of buying a home.

Participants will learn to look for a home suitable to their needs, gain knowledge on financial options, be given resources on protecting their investment, and understand ways to engage in their new neighborhood.  We have classes forming now.

Neighborhood Networks

Neighborhood Networks are groups of 25-50 families working together to maintain stability, provide mutual support, share opportunities, and build community that strengthens the fabric of the larger neighborhood.

Families meet twice per month to unload, organize, and prepare food boxes that are appropriated based on family size.  Following the food organization families meet to hear announcements, discuss Neighborhood Network opportunities and challenges, and hear presentations on a variety of educational topics.

Revitalizing Homes

The first 12 Blocks West block revitalization began in November of 2010 with the demolition of an abandoned building.  Two new single-family homes will be built in the abandoned buildings place.

The revitalization of Overton Street is funded in large by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) with some funding coming from the Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP).

We are currently researching and determining our next revitalization neighborhood site.
