Dr. Bob Lupton, president of Atlanta-based FCS Urban Ministries, visited Kansas City to share his extensive experience in how churches can help rebuild neighborhoods and empower the poor.

Fairmount sidewalk project completed

Students, teachers, parents and community leaders with the City of Independence and LINC celebrated the completion of a new sidewalk around Fairmount Elementary School in early December.  The sidewalk also leads from the school to Fairmount Park and increases access for all children to utilize the park. The celebration signals the end of an almost two year project to get the new sidewalk.

Homebuyer Education Program

Buying a home is one of the largest investments that one may make in their life. So why not be prepared and be educated before beginning the process? A new homebuyer education class will be offered to help prospective homebuyers learn more about managing their money, what they can afford, mortgages and loan products, and understanding credit scores.

12 Blocks West group happy to start replacing blight

Community partners who make up the nonprofit organization 12 Blocks West gathered at 710 S. Overton Ave. and witnessed the demolition of a three-story, 12-unit vacant, foreclosed apartment building. Independence School District officials called the demolition overdue, adding that the building had created safety and security concerns for neighboring residents.
